Asadah Kirkland’s Literary Bio
Asadah Kirkland, author of the book Beating Black Kids and Founder of the Soulful Chicago Book Fair has been a part of the literary industry for over 20 years. Her literary journey began as the manager of Afrocentric Bookstore in downtown Chicago, back in 1994. Asadah relocated to New York City in 1997, and began the development of what would be Harlem, New York’s only literary cafe at the time, Read My Mind Literary Cafe. Her desire and contribution to enhancing literacy shown best with the development of her own language arts curricula for the Boys and Girls Harbor afterschool program from 2001 to 2008. While her literary cafe plans did not come to full fruition back then, her desire to make an impact in the literary industry never left. In 2008 she helped edit, market and produce the book Align With the Divine, by Lady Prema. In 2009 Asadah wrote her own book Beating Black Kids, forging a crusade to end corporal punishment in America—starting with the Black community. Asadah has become the go-to person on the subject, having appeared on CNN, Inside Story Al Jazeera America, WABC-TV’s “Here & Now,” Essence.com, the Amsterdam News and New York Parenting Magazine, among many others. In 2012 Asadah co-produced the book series Urban Girl Adventures with her then 7 year old daughter, Patience. The series combines Patience’s photography with her mother’s words to share how children live in urban environments. Patience’s first webisode “Urban Girls Travel” first aired in 2017, mirroring her first book of the series.
In 2014, Asadah returned to Chicago with the sum total of her literary expertise, bringing to life, the Soulful Chicago Book Fair July 16, 2016. 2019 brings the Soulful Chicago Book Fair into its 4th year of operation. It is not only a platform for disseminating the message of Asadah’s book, but also a platform for the 100’s of stories by authors throughout the African Diaspora, that long for relevant venues to promote their work. Asadah has made it so that her book fairs and literary programming now happen throughout the year, highlighting literacy and African Diasporic literary arts through workshops, activities and entertainment. She is seen as the go-to person in the city of Chicago, for access to Black authors of all genres. For this reason, in February of 2018, the Chicago Public Library held an African American Lit Fest in partnership with the Soulful Chicago Book Fair, replicating it within 3500 square feet of Chicago’s main Harold Washington Library downtown. Asadah’s intention to have the Soulful Chicago Book Fair become a literary breath of fresh air to the South Side of Chicago has come to full fruition.
